History and setting
Julian is a mixed oak-and-pine community perched above the Anza-Borrego desert on Highway 78/79.
The 2003 Cedar Fire destroyed hundreds of homes across the back country and pushed Julian to organize as a Firewise site.
Volunteers run an annual roadside chipping program and coordinate defensible-space assessments with CAL FIRE and San Diego County.
